Üsküdar Municipal Council convened in the council chamber at the municipal building under the chairmanship of First Deputy Speaker Ali Aral to elect an acting mayor.
Following the Istanbul 2nd Administrative Court’s stay of execution concerning the election of Üsküdar’s acting mayor, the election was held again. The CHP/New Party Group nominated CHP council member Sibel Tan Çetinkaya, while the People’s Alliance nominated AK Party council member Dündar Ziya Gültekin.
As no candidate secured the required majority in the first three rounds, the fourth round was held, in which the candidate receiving the most votes would be elected. In the secret ballot, Gültekin received 23 of the 42 votes cast, while Çetinkaya received 19.
Dündar Ziya Gültekin was therefore elected acting mayor of Üsküdar. The CHP/New Party Group’s objections concerning two votes were rejected.
Following the election, council members from the CHP and New Party reacted to council members from the People’s Alliance.
What happened during the election process
The Istanbul Governor’s Office announced that the Istanbul Regional Administrative Court had rejected an appeal against the Istanbul 2nd Administrative Court’s decision to stay execution of the council resolution concerning the Üsküdar acting mayoral election held on August 5.
The governor’s office said it had been deemed appropriate for the Üsküdar District Municipal Council to convene at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 5, to elect the acting mayor.
The meeting held on that date was postponed on the grounds that the members attending the council had not reached the required quorum. The Municipal Council completed the election process at its subsequent meeting.
