Monday marked 103 years since Ankara was declared Türkiye’s capital. On Oct. 13, 1923, the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye passed a law making Ankara the administrative center of the new Turkish state.
A provision stating that “the seat of government of the State of Türkiye is the city of Ankara” was added to the constitution on a motion by İsmet Pasha and fellow lawmakers. Two weeks later, on Oct. 29, 1923, the Republic was proclaimed.
Heart of the War of Independence

Ankara, where Mustafa Kemal Atatürk arrived on Dec. 27, 1919, served as the center of the national struggle during the War of Independence, and the Grand National Assembly opened there on April 23, 1920.
Chosen for its secure location in the heart of Anatolia, Ankara grew in a planned way after becoming the capital. Today it is Türkiye’s second most populous city after Istanbul and remains the country’s seat of government.
