İzmir stood out in the Aegean Region's exports in May, while declines in some cities pulled down the overall regional picture. Nevertheless, increases seen in several provinces prevented exports from losing momentum entirely.
İzmir maintained its regional leadership by exporting 2.078 billion dollars in May. The city's exports rose by 1% compared to the same month last year, and İzmir alone accounted for 57% of the Aegean Region's exports.
From January to May, İzmir's total exports reached 9.51 billion dollars. The chemical sector led the city with exports worth 1.09 billion dollars.
Decline becomes evident in Manisa
Manisa, one of the important export centers in the Aegean Region, saw its May exports fall by 25.3% to 519 million dollars. The city's exports for the first five months also dropped by 10% to 2.826 billion dollars.
The electrical-electronics sector in Manisa remained the leader with exports of 475.8 million dollars. However, the sector's 35% decline was one of the most notable factors in the city's export loss.
Denizli continues growth
Denizli increased its exports by 5.2% in the first five months of the year, reaching 1.988 billion dollars. The electrical-electronics sector took the lead with 476 million dollars in exports.
The long-standing leading ready-to-wear sector in Denizli fell to second place. This change indicated a reshaping of the sectoral distribution in the city's exports.
Increases recorded in Balıkesir and other provinces
Balıkesir's exports also rose by 5.2%, surpassing the 1 billion dollar mark. Muğla grew by 6.5%, Kütahya by 4%, and Uşak by 7%.
These increases in the region demonstrated that despite sharp declines in some centers, the Aegean's production and export capacity remained intact. The performance differences among cities showed that regional exports progressed on a balanced footing.
Öztürk: The region preserved its production strength
Muhammet Öztürk, Coordinator President of the Aegean Exporters' Associations, stated that despite the slowdown in global trade, rising costs, and exchange rate pressures, the region maintained its production and export strength.
Öztürk expressed that if global demand recovers in the remaining part of the year and steps are taken to enhance exporters' competitiveness, the Aegean Region could finish 2026 with an export volume of 45 billion dollars.
