Shakhtar Donetsk head coach Arda Turan addressed his inclusion among the candidates for the Türkiye national team job. Turan spoke at a press conference held yesterday at Stamford Bridge in London, ahead of this evening’s UEFA Champions League match against Greek representatives AEK.
Speaking after his name was linked to the national team post following the departure of Italy’s Vincenzo Montella last week, Turan said the prospect was a great honor for him.

Seeing people unite around my name again after so many years is deeply moving for me. I cannot describe how much I love my country and my flag. There are other ways to serve and represent my country besides carrying the flag on my chest.
Turan said he had represented the national team at different levels and expressed his immense gratitude for the support he had received from his country. He added that, as a young coach, he could devote more time to the pitch and his development.
Turan cites Fatih Terim
Turan said Fatih Terim had carried the Turkish flag to Fiorentina and Milan as the first Turkish coach to win a European cup. He said he believed he was fulfilling the same duty of representation in a different way, adding that this approach could be more valuable and beneficial for Türkiye.

“I stand by my promise to Shakhtar”
The 39-year-old coach stressed that he would honor his commitment to Shakhtar Donetsk throughout his contract and said he had built shared dreams with his players and the club’s management.
Turan said they needed to focus on the AEK match, adding that putting his personal plans ahead of his players would be unfair to the excitement and hope they carried.
I believe dreams sometimes emerge at a time more suitable for someone else than for the person themselves. For that reason, I will remain committed until the end of my contract to Rinat Akhmetov, Shakhtar’s dreams and the players to whom I gave my word.
Turan said that, as a citizen of the Republic of Türkiye, he was uncomfortable with efforts to persuade him on the matter. He added that the national team job was an offer anyone could dream of, but that timing was important.
