The wife of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and chair of the United Nations High-Level Advisory Board of Eminent Persons on Zero Waste, Emine Erdoğan, spoke at the opening ceremony of Climate Week NYC 2026 in New York.
Emphasizing the importance of turning individual responsibility into global action in the fight against the climate crisis, Erdoğan said the Zero Waste movement shows that people can become part of the solution to climate problems rather than remain mere observers.
Erdoğan stressed that small behavioral changes could create lasting transformation if they became widespread across society and were supported by appropriate policies.

The Zero Waste message
Emine Erdoğan said the Zero Waste movement launched in Türkiye had become one of the strongest tools for climate action, calling for collective efforts to change consumption habits, use resources efficiently and reduce waste.
International representatives from governments, the business community and civil society came together at the opening program of New York Climate Week. The event was held as part of Climate Week NYC 2026, which began on September 21 and will continue through September 27.

Türkiye's climate vision will be taken to COP31
Family and Social Services Minister Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş also attended the program and followed Emine Erdoğan’s speech.

Göktaş said the approach demonstrated by Türkiye through its Zero Waste movement would continue to be shared with the international community at New York Climate Week and at COP31, which will be held in Antalya under Türkiye’s hosting.
As it moves toward COP31, Türkiye aims to highlight its climate policies and sustainability efforts, particularly the Zero Waste initiative, on international platforms.
