Autistic ultra-marathon swimmer Tuna Tunca successfully crossed the North Channel, the third leg of the Oceans Seven. According to a statement from Tunca's communications office, the athlete started his swim from the coast of Donaghadee in Northern Ireland and finished at the coast of Port Patrick in Scotland.
Battling water temperatures of 14 degrees Celsius on the approximately 40-kilometer course, Tunca completed the crossing in about 16 hours, overcoming strong tides, cold weather, dense jellyfish, and severe currents that lasted about three hours in the final section.
The successful swimmer, accompanied by his coach Mert Onaran, his team, and his mother Gül Nur Tunca, is supported by AXA Türkiye. Tunca will prepare for the next leg, the Catalina Channel in the US, in September.
Having previously crossed the English Channel and the Strait of Gibraltar, Tunca aims to complete the Oceans Seven. To date, only Bengisu Avcı from Türkiye has achieved this feat.
