US Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered Iran’s UN General Assembly delegation to leave the United States immediately after Qatari-mediated talks stalled, Axios reported, citing a US official. Rubio directed the US mission to the UN on Monday evening to tell Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his delegation to leave New York at once.

According to the report, the White House believed on Monday morning that the indirect talks could produce progress, but by late afternoon US officials concluded they had reached an impasse. Araghchi and his delegation boarded a flight from New York to Doha at 1:20 a.m. on Tuesday. One source said Araghchi had already been scheduled to fly back to Tehran on Monday evening.
“Secretary Rubio kicked out the Iranian delegation who had overstayed their welcome. The UN General Assembly was over, so it was time for them to go,” the US official said. A source familiar with the talks said: “It is stuck. The Iranians are asking for things the US can’t accept, and the US thinks it is winning so there is no need for compromise.”

The main sticking points are reported to be Iran’s nuclear program and the US naval blockade. The war between the US and Israel and Iran has now lasted about seven months.
