Konrad Berkowicz, a lawmaker from Poland’s far-right Confederation party, displayed an Israeli flag with the Star of David replaced by a swastika at the rostrum of the Sejm on April 14, 2026. “Israel is the new Third Reich, and its flag should look exactly like this,” he said.

Berkowicz claimed the number of children who have died in Gaza is “dozens of times higher” than in the war in Ukraine. The incident took place during a session that coincided with Holocaust Remembrance Day.
Sejm Speaker Włodzimierz Czarzasty said “displaying the swastika in the Polish Sejm is in no way justified” and announced a motion to penalize Berkowicz. A lawmaker from Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s coalition called on prosecutors to investigate, and US Ambassador Thomas Rose condemned the act. The European Jewish Congress denounced it, and the Auschwitz Jewish Center Foundation filed a criminal complaint on April 15.

Under Polish law, displaying Nazi symbols to promote fascism or incite hatred is punishable by up to three years in prison. Confederation holds 16 of the 460 seats in the Sejm. Footage of the incident recirculated in October.
