Devlet Bahçeli, leader of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and an ally of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, delivered a sharp warning to Greece at his party’s parliamentary group meeting on Oct. 13, saying Athens’ search for security would fail as long as it ignores Türkiye’s rights and the sovereignty of the Turkish Cypriot state.
“Greece must now understand that whomever it allies with, whatever agreement it signs and whatever weapons it buys, it will not be able to feel safe.” — Devlet Bahçeli
If the Greek government is arming itself to be protected from Türkiye, it should seek refuge in Turkish peace, Bahçeli said, adding that if it is arming to intimidate Türkiye, it should never forget that no power can frighten the country.

Power link and seabed surveys
Bahçeli also referred to a planned electricity interconnection between Greece, the Greek Cypriot administration and Israel, U.S. State Department support for the project and Athens’ attempt to resume seabed surveys. Recalling that Türkiye requires prior coordination on the route, he said it would be “a serious mistake for Athens to think it can overcome Ankara’s objections.”
If Greece wants lasting peace in the region, it should build friendly relations with its neighbors, he added.
