In an incident at a men's barbershop on Lale Street in Nevşehir, barber Fatih Yıldız offered plums from his village to his customer Berkay Göktan, who had come for a shave.
After eating the plum, Göktan had difficulty breathing. Realizing the situation, Yıldız performed the Heimlich maneuver on his customer. Repeating the maneuver several times, Yıldız dislodged the plum from the windpipe and saved Göktan's life.
The moments were recorded by the shop's security camera.
Barber's statement after the incident
Speaking after the incident, Fatih Yıldız said, "Berkay Göktan came to our salon for a shave. I sat him in the chair. I had plums from our village, and I offered some to him. After he ate one or two, I noticed the plum lodged in his windpipe. I thought maybe I could help him get his breath back by patting his back a few times, but it didn't work. Then I thought of performing the Heimlich maneuver. I did the Heimlich maneuver 3-4 times. Then I saw him take a deep breath and start coughing. He recovered afterward."
Yıldız continued, "My point is that I now truly believe the Heimlich maneuver saves lives. I strongly recommend that everyone in Turkey, indeed everyone, take basic first aid training and especially learn to perform the Heimlich maneuver. I also wish my customer Berkay a speedy recovery."
