Beşiktaş Club's debt increased by 38 percent in the period from June 1, 2025 to February 28, 2026, reaching 26 billion 263 million lira. Divan Board Chairman Ahmet Ürkmezgil called for financial discipline and transparency.
At Beşiktaş Club's 2026 2nd Ordinary Divan Board Meeting, striking figures regarding the black-and-white club's financial situation were shared. Audit board member Özgür Şentürk announced that the debt increased by 38 percent in the 9-month period between June 1, 2025 and February 28, 2026.
Şentürk noted that the debt, which was approximately 18 billion lira on May 31, 2025, reached 26 billion 263 million 695 thousand 438 lira as of February 28, 2026. The club's debt had been announced as 24 billion 362 million lira on November 30, 2025.
Taking the floor at the meeting, Beşiktaş Club Divan Board Chairman Ahmet Ürkmezgil expressed his expectation of financial discipline from the board of directors. Emphasizing that Beşiktaş is a trust for future generations, Ürkmezgil said:
Beşiktaş does not belong to any of us. It is a trust we received from our fathers and will pass on to our children. Our lands, our facilities, our brand are not a budget item for a management term, but the assets of future generations. The first responsibility of a trustee is to deliver the trust in a stronger state than it was received.
Ürkmezgil stated that the club can only survive by spending what it earns, and said, "It is possible to save the day with one-off revenues, but saving the future is achieved through regular and permanent income. Our concern is not only today's figures but also the possibility that tomorrow's resources are being consumed today."
Stating that financial stability must come before everything else, Ürkmezgil said, "Regardless of which management comes, financial discipline, transparency and accountability must become unchanging rules. We are not pointing fingers at anyone. We are talking about the system, not individuals."
Noting that Beşiktaş's biggest problem in recent years has been its inability to make its financial structure sustainable, Ürkmezgil added that his expectation from the board of directors is the permanent establishment of financial discipline and the club achieving a predictable financial structure.
