UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham rejected the idea of holding a referendum on whether Northern Ireland should remain part of the United Kingdom or join the Republic of Ireland.
Speaking to journalists during his first official visit to Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland, Burnham said a referendum on Irish reunification was no longer on the agenda.
Referring to the referendums on Brexit and Scottish independence, Burnham said the risks created by those processes could take a long time to overcome.
Burnham said he would adopt a cooperative approach to governing, but that some issues would remain outside the agenda. He described holding a referendum on Irish reunification as one of those issues.
Public services and the cost of living are priorities
Instead, Burnham said the focus should be on improving public services and tackling the pressures caused by the cost of living.
The UK prime minister said the problems people are facing today must be addressed, adding that the decade since the Brexit referendum had brought too much division and debate to society.
