Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is making an official visit to Türkiye at the invitation of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The visit is the first bilateral official visit to Türkiye by a Canadian prime minister.
Carney began his engagements in Ankara with a visit to Anıtkabir, where he laid a wreath at Atatürk's mausoleum.
Official ceremony at the Presidential Complex
After visiting Anıtkabir, Carney proceeded to the Presidential Complex, where President Erdoğan welcomed him at the main entrance. The national anthems of the two countries were played and a 21-gun salute was fired during the ceremony, which was accompanied by mounted troops. Carney greeted the Presidential Guard Regiment's ceremonial unit by saying, "Hello, soldier."
Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar, Trade Minister Ömer Bolat, National Intelligence Organization Director İbrahim Kalın, Presidency of Defence Industries Director Haluk Görgün and Türkiye's ambassador to Ottawa, Can Dizdar, also attended the ceremony. The two leaders are scheduled to hold a one-on-one meeting, followed by talks between their delegations, a joint news conference and a signing ceremony for agreements.
Strategic partnership on the agenda

Presidential Communications Director Burhanettin Duran said the visit on Oct. 22-23 would address regional and global issues as well as bilateral cooperation, and that the two countries planned to elevate their relations to the level of a strategic partnership. Reuters reported that the two leaders were expected to sign a declaration to deepen cooperation in four areas, including defence and energy.
Canada suspended export permits for some defence products to Türkiye in 2020 following the Nagorno-Karabakh war. The two countries launched negotiations for a free trade agreement during the NATO Summit in Ankara in July 2026. Carney is also expected to meet with business representatives in Istanbul during his visit.
