Amazon CEO Andy Jassy says the way for young employees to succeed in their careers is to "start from the lower levels" and prove their reliability by doing unseen, challenging jobs. In a statement on Capital Group’s Power of Advice podcast, Jassy expressed that Generation Z will not immediately reach the jobs they dream of and that they need to patiently "pay their dues" for this.
Jassy emphasized that young employees need to firmly establish their foundations with a reliable, meticulous, and tireless work ethic. He stated that those who rise in their careers are those who do not avoid difficult and seemingly insignificant jobs. Having worked at Amazon for nearly 30 years, Jassy shared that he observed the most successful employees during the company's growth process are those who continuously learn and renew themselves.
Giving examples from his own career experiences, Jassy explained that in his youth he worked in different fields such as sports broadcasting, retail, and coaching, discovering what he did not like. After completing his MBA at Harvard Business School, he joined Amazon in 1997, where he worked in customer relations and marketing. In 2003, Jassy led the establishment of Amazon Web Services (AWS), playing a key role in making AWS the most profitable division of Amazon. He has been serving as Amazon CEO since 2021.
Jassy points out the importance of learning through trial and error rather than drawing a perfect roadmap in career planning. He advises young people to gain experience in different fields to discover what they like and dislike. He states that the foundation of a successful career is continuous learning and self-improvement.
