Gülşen Ünsal, a police officer at the Antalya Police Department’s Cybercrime Bureau, said cyberbullying encountered on social networking platforms poses significant risks, particularly for children and young people.
Ünsal said social network users may post humiliating, mocking and degrading comments under content shared by people they know or do not know. She said such behavior may amount to cyberbullying.
Responding may also constitute a crime
Ünsal said children and young people exposed to cyberbullying sometimes respond with messages containing insults or threats, adding: "Children and young people exposed to cyberbullying can sometimes respond by sending messages containing insults or threats. Such responses also constitute a crime."

Ünsal stressed that children and young people who encounter cyberbullying should not engage in arguments with the other party. She advised victims to report and block the relevant account through the social networking platform.
Advice to contact law enforcement over insults and threats
Ünsal highlighted the importance of contacting law enforcement in cases involving insults, threats or blackmail. She said people should know which online behaviors constitute crimes.
Online crimes may include insults, threats, blackmail, harassment, fraud through information systems, violations of privacy and the unlawful acquisition of personal data.

Ünsal said actions such as illegal betting and inciting or humiliating the public to hatred and hostility may also constitute crimes when the relevant conditions are met.
Advice to children and young people on responsible use
Drawing attention to the legal consequences of actions carried out in digital environments, Ünsal said children and young people should act responsibly when using the internet. She recommended sharing negative situations with their families and, when necessary, with law enforcement.
Ünsal stressed that, from a legal perspective, there is no difference between crimes committed in the physical world and those committed in the virtual environment.
