Tovar dismissed
Costa Rica’s Foreign Minister Tovar attended a meeting chaired by Trump in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings. Representatives from several Latin American countries also took part.
Costa Rican President Fernandez dismissed Tovar for attending the meeting without informing him. The Office of the President said the issue was not Tovar’s participation but Fernandez’s failure to receive adequate information and his inability to attend the meeting.
Fernandez apologizes
Fernandez spoke at an event attended by Melinda Hildebrand, the US ambassador to San Jose, following the incident. Fernandez said the invitation to the meeting had not been properly conveyed to him and apologized to the United States for being unable to attend.

Regarding Tovar’s dismissal, Fernandez said, “Mistakes of this kind cannot be overlooked.”
Tenure lasted 139 days
Tovar took office as foreign minister on May 8, after Fernandez assumed the presidency. With a tenure of 139 days, Tovar became the shortest-serving person to hold the position in Costa Rica’s history.
