Italian electrician Federico Demazi and his wife, Baasansureng Ganhurel, reached Bilecik during a journey they began by tandem bike from Rome to draw attention to air pollution in Mongolia. The couple has been on the road for eight months since setting out on December 7, 2025.
They will visit many cities in Türkiye
Welcomed in Bilecik by Hakan Yavuz, a representative of a cycling association, the couple plans to visit many cities in Türkiye before traveling via Artvin to Batumi. After continuing their journey through different countries, their goal is to reach Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia.
Demazi said they chose a tandem bike so they could travel together and support each other on the road. He said they had received a warm welcome in Türkiye, adding that people had offered them tea and food.
After Ankara, the couple plans to visit Cappadocia, then reach the Black Sea region via Central Anatolia and travel from Artvin to Batumi.

The journey aims to draw attention to air pollution
Demazi said the trip was not merely a tourist excursion but an initiative aimed at highlighting Mongolia’s harsh winter conditions and air pollution problem.
Demazi said large amounts of coal are burned for heating in Mongolia during the winter, increasing air pollution. The couple aims to raise awareness about improving insulation in homes and reducing coal use.

Their accommodation changes along the way
Demazi said they sometimes camped and sometimes stayed in local people’s homes during the eight-month journey. He said people from different countries came together through such journeys and had the opportunity to learn about different cultures.
Hakan Yavuz, a representative of the Bilecik Cycling Association, said they had previously hosted many cyclists from different countries in the city.
