During an operation targeting wildlife smuggling in Istanbul's Çatalca district, a large number of exotic snakes were found in a house. Teams from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry's Nature Conservation and National Parks Istanbul Branch, together with law enforcement, conducted a dawn raid at the address.
The operation was carried out following a tip-off that dangerous snake species were being kept and bred under unsuitable conditions in the house. A detailed search revealed that the snakes held in special compartments and cages lacked the necessary import permits and possession documents.
Species Seized Counted Individually
The teams counted a total of 42 snakes placed under protection. Among them were 18 pythons, 21 Egyptian snakes, and 3 king snakes.
It was noted that pythons are among the species that can grow to enormous sizes, Egyptian snakes are known for their colorful appearance, and king snakes are considered aggressive species. The snakes were placed in special transport cases and taken for relocation to their natural habitats or zoos.
Homeowner Fined
The individual found to be illegally breeding and trading the snakes was fined under the Animal Protection Law and the Game Hunting Law. The fine was reported to be at a record level.
Authorities stated that inspections continue against the unauthorized keeping and trading of wild animals in home environments. They emphasized the importance of citizens reporting such illegal activities for the protection of biodiversity.
The incident is recorded as one of the most notable operations against illegal possession of wild animals in homes in the city. It was learned that the care and transfer process of the seized animals will be conducted under protection.
