The famous panda family living at Everland theme park in South Korea has grown with a new cub. The park announced that 12-year-old female giant panda Ai Bao gave birth to a healthy female cub on June 3.
The cub was born at 10:53 a.m., about two hours after Ai Bao went into labor. Weighing 171 grams at birth, both the mother and cub are reported to be healthy and are under the supervision of caretakers and veterinarians.
Ai Bao and Le Bao’s Fourth Daughter
The newborn is the fourth daughter of Ai Bao and her 13-year-old mate Le Bao. The couple previously had Fu Bao, born in 2020, and twins Rui Bao and Hui Bao, born in 2023.
This birth is recorded as the third successful natural panda birth in the country. Everland also announced that this year marks the tenth anniversary of the opening of Panda World and the joint conservation research conducted with China.
Care Team Monitored the Birth for Months
It was noted that giant pandas can only breed for one to three days a year, and pregnancy is difficult to confirm until very close to birth due to real and false pregnancy symptoms. Everland’s animal care team used data from previous births to analyze blood and urine samples and monitored the couple’s hormone levels to determine the optimal mating period.
The pandas naturally mated in February, and from mid-May, they were monitored 24/7 in a special birthing room. Throughout the process, close contact was maintained with the Giant Panda Conservation and Research Center in Sichuan Province, China.
Name and First Visit Plans to Be Announced Later
Caretaker Kang Cheol-won expressed happiness at welcoming the new life and said they will provide all care necessary for the cub to grow healthily. Kang noted that following Fu Bao and the twins, the new family member has brought comfort and joy to many people.
The cub is expected to receive a name through a public contest held when it is about 100 days old. Everland stated that for now, the cub will stay in a special area with Ai Bao, and the visit date will be determined after assessing its immune status and ability to walk independently.
It was reminded that Fu Bao and the twins only met visitors after five months. Everland plans to share the cub’s development through videos and social media channels for the time being.
