Presidential Communications Director Burhanettin Duran released a video message marking the 10th anniversary of the failed coup attempt on July 15, 2016. Duran said Türkiye has the strength to eliminate any threat to its sovereignty and independence.
Duran described the night of July 15 as a critical turning point in Türkiye’s history and said President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s leadership and determined political stance from the outset played a decisive role in suppressing the coup attempt.
Duran recalled that FETÖ members targeted state institutions, Parliament and media outlets that night and seized control of the Bosphorus bridges. He emphasized that the Turkish people took to the streets in response to President Erdoğan’s call and resisted the coup attempt.
Duran said 253 people were martyred and thousands were injured during the coup attempt, adding that the state had succeeded in purging FETÖ elements from its institutions despite all the challenges it faced.
Duran noted that FETÖ poses a threat not only to Türkiye but to every country where it operates, and called on friendly countries to cooperate with Ankara against the organization’s members who are wanted internationally.
Türkiye was the scene of a failed coup attempt on July 15, 2016, carried out by a limited number of soldiers affiliated with FETÖ. The government declared July 15 “Democracy and National Unity Day” in memory of the 253 people who lost their lives while resisting the coup attempt.
