Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak described Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s deliberate escalation of tensions with Türkiye as “irresponsible and foolish.”
In a post on the US-based social media platform X on Wednesday, Barak said, “It is difficult to decide which is worse.”
Barak argued that Netanyahu aims to enter the elections amid a series of security tensions that would heighten public anxiety, and maintained that the approach was driven by a political motive.
Barak says problems with Türkiye can be resolved
Barak said Türkiye was neither Iran nor Syria under the Assad government, adding that no strategic issue with Ankara was irresolvable. He said the problems could be resolved, eased or postponed over the long term through coordinated and secret contacts with the United States.
Arguing that Netanyahu had completely lost control, Barak said the Israeli prime minister was focused not on the country’s security but on preserving his political survival. He likened the situation to the conduct of an addicted gambler acting amid failure to achieve war aims and an expected political defeat.
Barak says repairing the damage will take a long time
Barak said Netanyahu’s approach had seriously alarmed Israel’s few remaining allies and friends around the world and in the region, adding that repairing the resulting security and diplomatic damage would take a long time.
Barak also argued that there was no point in taking new irresponsible steps that could backfire.
