At the 61st hearing of the Criminal Organization for Profit trial, 414 people, including 59 detainees, appeared before the judge, with Ekrem İmamoğlu among them. Defendant İmamoğlu, taking the floor, told the presiding judge that it seemed impossible for the session to conclude on July 9.
Tension Between İmamoğlu and Presiding Judge
The presiding judge stated that they had made an assessment with the panel on this matter, saying, 'We set a schedule and we are following it. After Tuncay Yılmaz's defense, we will continue with Mr. Ekrem and conclude on the 9th. There is no rule that detained defendants must finish in the first session. If necessary, we will hold additional sessions, but we will close on the 9th.'
When defendant İmamoğlu reacted by asking the reason for the July 9 date, the presiding judge said, 'Mr. Ekrem, do not take the matter elsewhere. We set a schedule and we are following it.' As İmamoğlu continued his reaction, the presiding judge warned him, 'You are constantly intervening from your seat. I will have to apply Article 203 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CMK) and remove you from the courtroom.'
As İmamoğlu and his lawyers continued their objections, the presiding judge ordered İmamoğlu's removal from the courtroom on the grounds of disrupting the hearing. After a period of objection to this decision, İmamoğlu and some other defendants were escorted out of the courtroom by gendarmerie. The court recessed the hearing.
