England recorded its highest temperature of the year on Thursday, August 13. Temperatures reached 38.1°C at Kew Gardens in London.
According to preliminary data from the Met Office, the reading made it the fifth-hottest day in the country’s recorded history. Temperatures reached 38°C in Pershore, Worcestershire, while readings of 36°C or higher were recorded in 40 different parts of the country.
Heatwave continues
England’s fifth heatwave of the year began on Tuesday. Severe drought conditions have been observed across much of England and Wales, while numerous temperature records have been broken during the summer.
Neil Armstrong, the Met Office’s chief meteorologist, said the extreme heatwave was the latest example of an unusual summer. Armstrong said temperatures would remain high overnight and were not expected to fall below 20°C, making it a tropical night, before returning to seasonal averages over the next few days.
