Manchester City announced the appointment of Italian head coach Enzo Maresca to replace Pep Guardiola, who managed the team for many years.
Maresca signed a three-year contract. The 46-year-old, who is well-acquainted with Manchester City's youth system, served as Guardiola's assistant during the 2018-2019 season when the club won three trophies.
In the club's statement, Maresca said: 'I know Manchester City well and this opportunity to manage the team is fantastic for me. What makes this club special is the quality of the people working here. I thank them for their trust.'
The Italian coach continued: 'I can't wait to work with the players. I want to win, play good football, and enjoy the pressure of representing Manchester City.'
Maresca began his managerial career at Parma in 2021, winning only 4 of 14 matches. At the start of the 2023-2024 season, he took over Championship side Leicester City, leading them to the title and promotion to the Premier League.
His success at Leicester earned him a move to Chelsea. At the London club, he was tasked with leading a young but expensive squad to the Champions League. Maresca finished fourth in the league, won the Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup. However, after relations with the club owners soured, he left Stamford Bridge midway through his second season.
Now he faces the daunting task of filling the shoes of Pep Guardiola, who made Manchester City the dominant force in English football for a decade.
Guardiola announced his departure last May. The Spanish manager won an impressive collection of trophies with City, including six Premier League titles and one Champions League victory. In his final season, he added the League Cup and FA Cup to cap off a glorious era.
