Scotland national team manager Steve Clarke resigned after his team failed to advance from the group stage at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Scottish Football Association officially announced the departure in a statement on Saturday evening.
In the statement released by the association, it said: 'Scotland Men's National Team manager Steve Clarke has resigned from his post. After seven years as the manager of our most successful national team, he has decided to end his tenure.'
World Cup journey ends at group stage
Scotland's elimination from the tournament was confirmed after Croatia defeated Ghana, who had already secured progression to the next round. This result completely eliminated Clarke's team, which was in Group 12, from contention for a spot among the eight best third-placed teams.
The 62-year-old manager had successfully led Scotland to their first World Cup finals appearance since 1998. Scotland made a good start to the tournament, beating Haiti 1-0 in their opening match. They then lost to Morocco by the same scoreline before suffering a heavy 3-0 defeat against Brazil in their final group game. Despite collecting three points, they could not advance to the last 32 due to goal difference.
Emotional farewell from Clarke
Departing manager Clarke released a farewell message in which he praised his players. Clarke said: 'The most emotional part of this farewell is regarding my players. Without them, we would not have experienced any of those moments we have accumulated from 2019 until today.'
Stating that his players deserve all the praise and recognition, the experienced coach said: 'It was a true honor to be their manager.' Clarke concluded his remarks by saying: 'Thank you for embracing me. I wish success to whoever comes after me.'
