Turkish Cypriot President Tufan Erhurman and Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides met on Tuesday, Oct. 13, at the UN Good Offices Mission in the buffer zone in Nicosia. The UN-hosted talks produced no agreement on a new confidence-building measure or a new crossing point.
The agenda centred on seven confidence-building measures that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres put forward on the island in late July. Before the meeting, Erhurman said six of those proposals had already been accepted by the two sides and that he wanted a results-oriented meeting.
Christodoulides described the meeting as “good,” saying the leaders exchanged views on the negotiating methodology, the substance of the Cyprus problem and confidence-building measures. He objected to limiting the agenda to Guterres’ seven measures and said his own 19-point package remains on the table.

According to assessments in the Greek Cypriot press, the atmosphere was positive but no concrete agreement was reached, and no date was set for a formal resumption of negotiations.
The two leaders agreed to meet again next week. They will attend a bicommunal festival in the village of Pyla together on Saturday and will also join meetings of the Technical Committee on Youth, the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage and the Civil Society Advisory Body. The UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy on Cyprus is expected to visit the island soon.
