European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called for deepening cooperation between the European Union and the United States in the field of artificial intelligence. Von der Leyen said that if the two sides acted together, they could create a strong global impact.
Von der Leyen made a statement from her account on the US-based X platform after the artificial intelligence session at the G7 Leaders' Summit held in Evian-les-Bains, France. She stressed that artificial intelligence is the most important technology of our time and is developing rapidly.
Emphasis on common market and shared responsibility
Von der Leyen stated that artificial intelligence offers great opportunities but also entails various risks for free and democratic societies. She noted that Europe and the US have complementary strengths, shared security interests, and leadership responsibility in this field.
Von der Leyen said that the EU and the US together represent 70 percent of the world market, and therefore cooperation must be deepened further. She called for joint investments and urged the acceleration of the use of artificial intelligence in every field from industry to healthcare.
Call for reliable and safe models
Von der Leyen also said that they must ensure the most powerful artificial intelligence models are reliable and safe. This message was interpreted as a call for competition in AI to be conducted not only on speed and capacity but also on safety and oversight.
On June 13, the US administration had decided to ban foreign governments, companies, and individuals from accessing the "Fable 5" and "Mythos 5" artificial intelligence models developed by Anthropic. Following the decision, Anthropic had deactivated its advanced AI models for all users.
This development marked a period in which technology, security, and access policies in AI are being discussed more closely on the Western front. Von der Leyen's initiative highlighted the search for a common line between Europe and the US on this issue.
