A new report published by the London Stock Exchange Group reveals that the green economy, when assessed as an independent sector, has risen to become the world's third-largest field.
As of the end of April 2026, the green economy's market size surpassed $10 trillion. This scale places the sector third after technology and industry, while also leaving healthcare behind.
Revenues spread across broad areas
The green economy encompasses a very wide group of companies generating revenue from renewable energy, electrification, clean transportation, energy efficiency, the circular economy, and environmental solutions.
According to the report, the total green revenues of more than 21,000 publicly traded companies within the LSEG scope grew by 5.3 percent in 2025. This increase was recorded as the fastest growth seen since 2022.
Revenue growth occurred in 75 percent of the 133 green segments examined. The report stated that this broad-based rise was driven by the combined effect of accelerating electrification, electricity demand stemming from artificial intelligence, energy efficiency pressures, and growth in clean transportation.
Electric vehicles and battery technologies stand out
Electric vehicles and advanced battery technologies were among the notable headlines, generating an additional $62 billion in revenue in 2025.
The data showed that more than 1.5 million green mergers and acquisitions have taken place over the past 10 years, with total transactions in this area reaching $4.1 trillion. This figure corresponds to 13.4 percent of global mergers and acquisitions during the period in question.
The report also highlighted that the green economy has outperformed global equity markets by 133 percent since 2008. Over the same period, the compound annual growth rate in the green economy was 18 percent, while the broader market remained at 12 percent.
