The European Union has called on Israel and Lebanon to fully comply with the terms of the ceasefire agreement. In a written statement on behalf of the EU, satisfaction was expressed over the constructive continuation of direct negotiations between the two countries.
The statement emphasized that all parties must fully respect the provisions of the ceasefire. It was also clearly stated that Hezbollah's attempts to introduce additional conditions to the agreement are not accepted.
Call to Halt Military Activities
The EU demanded the immediate cessation of all military activities in the region. The statement called for Hezbollah to withdraw south of the Litani River and for Israel to leave Lebanese territory.
The Union reaffirmed its support for the Lebanese government and expressed readiness to contribute to the implementation of any agreement reached between Israel and Lebanon. It was stressed that the peoples of both countries have the right to live in peace and security without the threat of renewed conflict.
Humanitarian and Security Concerns in Lebanon
The statement noted that ongoing tensions and airstrikes have imposed severe humanitarian and socio-economic costs on the Lebanese people. The EU highlighted that this situation further increases the region's fragility.
Support for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was reiterated. The killing of another UNIFIL soldier in the attacks on June 4 was condemned, with the statement emphasizing that the killing of peacekeeping personnel violates international law and that those responsible must be held accountable.
