Unlike the extensive squad changes of recent years, Fenerbahçe adopted a more controlled, needs-based policy during the 2026-2027 summer transfer window. The Yellow-Navy Blues preferred to reinforce areas they considered lacking rather than undertake another rebuild.
The transfer moves were shaped by the coaching staff’s game plan and the squad’s needs. Instead of adding alternatives in every position, the management targeted players who could make a direct contribution to the team’s style of play.
Fewest signings in eight years
Fenerbahçe signed an average of 12 players per season during the summer transfer windows over the last eight years. The figure was 11 in the 2018-2019 season, 13 in 2019-2020, 18 in 2020-2021, 9 in 2021-2022, 13 in each of 2022-2023 and 2023-2024, 8 in 2024-2025 and 9 in 2025-2026.
The Yellow-Navy team completed the transfer window ahead of the 2026-2027 season with five players. The club thus recorded its lowest number of summer signings in the last eight years.
Transfers shaped by the team’s needs
Fenerbahçe reinforced the positions it needed rather than building an overcrowded squad. The club prioritized the striker position, which was considered lacking last season, while also making signings for the wings and defense.
Three of the new signings have started directly in the first 11 this season. Nathan Ake has played in all competitions, while Mason Greenwood and Vedat Muric have stood out with their contributions on the scoresheet.
Romelu Lukaku was brought into the competition for the striker position, while Kojo Oppong joined the squad as a future-oriented investment for the center-back position.
Departures also took place
Fenerbahçe traveled to its camp in Austria with 36 players and carried out extensive work to make the squad more manageable. The club made signings in positions identified according to the coaching staff’s game plan and moved away from recruiting players solely to create alternatives.
The Yellow-Navy Blues added Mason Greenwood, Nathan Ake, Vedat Muric, Romelu Lukaku and Kojo Oppong to their squad during this period. The club parted ways with Sidiki Cherif, Fred Rodrigues, Anderson Talisca, Cengiz Ünder, Çağlar Söyüncü, Sofyan Amrabat, Dominik Livakovic, İrfan Can Eğribayat, Omar Fayed, Diego Carlos and Anthony Musaba.
Champions League return after 18 years
With the contribution of their moves during the transfer window, Fenerbahçe qualified for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in 18 years. The Yellow-Navy team evaluated the economic revenue that participation in the competition would provide alongside its sporting goals for the new season.
