Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan responded to reactions after Libya's House of Representatives ratified the maritime jurisdiction memorandum signed with Türkiye in 2019.
"The point we have reached is a diplomatic success of our foreign policy conducted under the leadership of our president," Fidan said. "Some are reacting because they have to react. Some have strategic problems, but this is an extremely legitimate agreement from a legal and political standpoint."
Israel: 'We strongly condemn'
Israel's Foreign Ministry said: "We strongly condemn the decision of the Libyan House of Representatives to ratify the maritime memorandum between Türkiye and Libya. This agreement violates the sovereign rights of our close allies in the region. Unfortunately, we are once again witnessing Türkiye's activities aimed at destabilizing the Eastern Mediterranean."

EU, Greece, the Greek Cypriot administration and Egypt also react
European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a joint statement that they regretted the decision, that the EU's 2019 position was unchanged, and expressed solidarity with Greece and the Greek Cypriot administration. Greece's Foreign Ministry said the memorandum violates the international law of the sea, the Greek Cypriot administration condemned the decision, and Egypt called the deal a "clear violation" of its exclusive economic zone.
In Türkiye, main opposition CHP leader Özgür Özel responded to von der Leyen, saying "Türkiye and Libya are two sovereign states," while MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli said the decision strengthened Türkiye's rights and interests in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The Benghazi-based House of Representatives unanimously ratified the memorandum in a closed session and also unanimously repealed its 2020 decisions rejecting the memorandum and calling for political ties with Türkiye to be severed.
