A forest fire on Greece’s Skyros Island affected 3,636 dönüm, or approximately 363.6 hectares of land.
Data obtained from the European Union’s Copernicus satellite system on August 16 showed that the fire had devastated a large area of the island. A significant portion of the damaged forest consisted of pine trees that had regrown after a major fire in the same area in 2008.
The fire is largely under control
The Greek Fire Service announced that the fire was largely under control and that no active flames remained.
Fire crews continue to tackle small fire spots and smoky areas. They are also carrying out cooling operations in the affected areas to prevent the fire from reigniting.
The cause of the fire is under investigation
The Evia arson investigation unit is investigating the cause of the fire.
