Minister Kurum announced that the number of independent units completed through urban renewal in Istanbul has reached 1 million. Kurum also shared images of residents moving into their new homes following the urban renewal project carried out in Tokatköy neighborhood of the Beykoz district.
Kurum said urban renewal efforts would continue to prepare Istanbul for disasters. The statement also included remarks by Kazım Sönmez, one of the rights holders in Tokatköy, who said, "Who could be more reassuring than the state?"
Renewal of 291,000 independent units continues in Istanbul
Since its establishment in 2012, the Urban Transformation Presidency has been carrying out the renewal of buildings across Türkiye that pose risks in terms of earthquakes and other disasters.
Across Türkiye, 2,761,000 independent units in all 81 provinces have been included in the urban renewal program. Renewal has been completed for 2,378,000 of these units, while work continues on 383,000.
Since 2012, 1,298,000 independent units in Istanbul have been included in the urban renewal program. Renewal has been completed for 1,007,000 independent units in the city, while work continues on 291,000.
Tokatköy project includes 823 independent units
A two-phase project was carried out in Beykoz's Tokatköy neighborhood in cooperation with Emlak Konut Real Estate Investment Trust. The project included the construction of 823 independent units in total: 776 homes and 47 commercial premises.
In the first phase of the completed project, 227 homes and 35 commercial premises were built and handed over to the rights holders.
Ali Dinç, who moved into his new home, said fire engines could not enter the street where the old buildings stood and that residents felt shaking whenever a car, bus or heavy vehicle passed by. Dinç said he had applied for urban renewal because of his fear of earthquakes and stated that he felt more at ease in the area with its new buildings.
Kazım Sönmez said the area had homes with different floor heights that were not suitable for earthquakes, adding that the new residential area had exceeded his expectations. Sönmez said the new buildings had been constructed to be sturdy and that the state had secured the health and homes of citizens.
Ömer Kuru, another resident of Tokatköy, said the quality of the new buildings was far beyond his expectations.
Renewal launched for 384,553 independent units under the Half Is on Us campaign
As part of the Half Is on Us campaign, introduced to increase urban renewal in Istanbul, 384,553 independent units have been included in the urban renewal program.
Under the campaign's building-based renewal model, citizens who rebuild their buildings classified as risky receive a total of 1,875,000 lira in support: an 875,000-lira grant, an 875,000-lira loan and 125,000 lira in relocation assistance.
Citizens benefiting from the program can have their homes rebuilt by contractor companies. Under the same terms, rights holders receive a 437,500-lira grant, a 437,500-lira loan and 125,000 lira in moving assistance for one shop or commercial premises.
For large, area-based renewal projects similar to housing complexes, TOKİ or Emlak Konut undertakes the construction. Under this model, each rights holder receives an 875,000-lira grant and 125,000 lira in moving assistance; the grant is deducted from the construction cost, while the remaining debt is paid in installments over a long term under favorable payment conditions.
