The Foreign Ministry reacted to the recommendation in the European Parliament to allocate funding from the 2027 European Union budget for a purported monument that the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus is reportedly planning to build to slander the Turkish Armed Forces.
The ministry issued a written statement on the proposal included in the opinion of the European Parliament's Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality regarding the 2027 EU budget.
Foreign Ministry stresses historical facts
The statement said that the claims put forward by the Greek Cypriot side distort historical facts and politicize the Cyprus issue.
The ministry said that the Turkish Armed Forces' 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation prevented the destruction of the Turkish Cypriot people and brought peace to the entire island, which has continued for more than half a century.
Call for impartiality from EU institutions
The statement argued that EU institutions, instead of contributing to a solution to the Cyprus issue, are further undermining trust between the communities by moving away from the principles of impartiality and justice and becoming instruments of Greek Cypriot propaganda.
The ministry also called on EU officials not to become instruments of circles seeking to distance Türkiye from the European Union through the steps they take.
