Four deaf badminton players trained at Rakadami Sports Club are preparing for the world championships after achieving results at the European Youth Games.
The athletes selected for the national team after their results at the Türkiye championships include 16-year-old Beren Su Ulus, her 14-year-old sister Selen Naz Ulus, 15-year-old Ahmet Said Mahmutoğlu and 17-year-old Mehmetcan Kösür.
Preparing for the world championships
The athletes continue their training at Anadolu University’s 100th Year Sports Hall for the World Deaf Badminton Championships, scheduled to be held in Kaunas, Lithuania, from July 17-24, 2027.
The team, coached by Türkiye Deaf Badminton National Team coach Kerem Çınar, trains 5 days a week. The four athletes aim to achieve new results in international competitions.
Two European results
Beren Su Ulus finished second in the girls’ doubles category at the European Youth Games for the Deaf held in Germany. Mehmetcan Kösür finished fourth in the mixed doubles category.
Çınar said they had been training deaf athletes in badminton for approximately 4 years. He said Rakadami Sports Club, which they established with parents last year, has 74 athletes, 24 of whom are deaf.
Çınar said the athletes, who have won Türkiye championships in different age categories, also achieved results at the European Youth Games, adding that their work was not limited to sporting success.
Çınar said they attached importance to deaf athletes taking part more actively in social life by training alongside other athletes. He noted that Beren Su Ulus’s commitment to an intensive training program contributed to her second-place finish in Europe, while the other athletes continued preparing for new competitions.
The athletes’ goals
Beren Su Ulus, an 11th-grade student at Eskişehir Eğitimciler Sports High School, said she was very happy with her second-place finish in Europe. Saying she was excited to achieve success at this level for the first time, Ulus said, "I was very happy. I was very excited. My dream is to become world champion."
Mehmetcan Kösür said he had started playing badminton approximately 1-1.5 years ago and wanted to represent Türkiye in the best possible way at the world championships. Kösür said, "God willing, I aim to win first place at the world championships and then go to the Olympics. My dream is to participate in the Olympics."
Kösür said he tried to improve his fitness by running on days without training and that he was preparing intensively together with his teammates on the national team.
Pride in wearing the national team jersey
Pakize Altaş, the mother of Beren Su Ulus and Selen Naz Ulus, said her daughters had worked for a long time to achieve success. Altaş said her daughters were selected for the national team after winning Türkiye championships in their age groups, adding that wearing the national team jersey was an important source of pride for their family.
Altaş said, "Our dream was to wear the national team jersey with the Turkish flag. To go one step further and wave our flag on the podium there was indescribable."
