The wave of protests that has gripped France for weeks is spreading to other parts of Europe. In Greece, thousands of students and teachers took to the streets on Oct. 21 over problems in the education system and the high cost of living.
Police estimated about 10,000 people marched in Athens and its suburbs, while organizers claimed a higher turnout. Rallies were also held in Thessaloniki, Patras, Larissa and Crete. Teachers went on strike, though some schools stayed open.
Demands: more funding, smaller classes
Protesters called for more funding for education, smaller classes, better school buildings and affordable student housing. Some university students camped overnight in Athens' Syntagma Square outside parliament, demanding rent controls.
Reuters said the Athens rally was peaceful. Demonstrators said they were inspired by protests in France and elsewhere in Europe. The rallies add pressure on Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis' center-right government, which faces elections in mid-2027.
