German Chancellor Merz faced an awkward moment during a joint press conference in Berlin with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
At the press conference, Merz stated, "I am not aware of any secret Germany-Russia meeting."
However, contrary to Merz's remarks, Aliyev said they had confirmed that such a meeting took place in Baku.
Aliyev indicated that there are records pointing to a secret meeting between Germany and Russia in Baku, that they were not informed, and that Azerbaijani territory was used without notification.
Before Aliyev took the floor, Merz had said, "We are proposing meetings, but Putin does not come to the table, so we continue to support Ukraine."
Aliyev, for his part, announced that on the dates German officials arrived in Baku, Russian officials also came to the city, citing flight records.
