Greek diving team AegeanTec discovered a German light torpedo boat from World War II during research in the depths of the Ionian Sea. The vessel, named LS 6, was found at a depth of approximately 96 meters and in an almost vertical position.
According to the diving team, the vessel's location was determined after years of technical analysis. The identity of the largely intact boat was confirmed by examining technical features such as its hull structure, Junkers Jumo engines, dimensions, and the tow rope still attached to its bow.
According to information provided by the research group, LS 6 was brought to the Aegean Sea for use in German naval operations after Italy's surrender in 1943. The vessel was later damaged in a British air attack and sank in the Ionian Sea while being towed to Piraeus for repairs.
The diving team emphasized that LS 6 is the only surviving wreck of the Leichte Schnellboot class and that this discovery will provide valuable data for maritime history and underwater archaeology.
