The number of West Nile virus cases in Greece has reached 290. As of September 2, 24 patients had died from the virus; all those who died were over 65.
Fifty-eight new cases were detected over the past week. Central nervous system complications, including encephalitis, meningitis or acute flaccid paralysis, occurred in 199 patients.
In 91 cases, symptoms were mild or no central nervous system involvement was detected.
Cases recorded in 69 municipalities
Infections were recorded in 69 municipalities across the country, covering 20 regional units. The virus circulated more widely in the Attica region this year than in previous years.
In the coming period, new infections are expected to emerge both in areas where cases have previously been recorded and in new areas as the virus spreads.
Public health measures
The National Public Health Organization of Greece said epidemiological surveillance, mosquito-control programs and personal protective measures are important for controlling the disease.
