Hull City began the new Premier League season with a win by defeating Manchester United 2-0 in their opening match. The game was played at MKM Stadium on Saturday.
Competing in the Premier League for the first time since the 2016-2017 season, Hull City put in an impressive performance against Manchester United, who finished third last season, and claimed their first three points of the campaign.
Two goals in the first half
The home side took the lead in the 17th minute through Nigerian Oluwasemilogo Ajayi. After following the ball as it rebounded off the post following the goalkeeper's intervention inside the penalty area, Ajayi capitalized on confusion in the defense and sent it into the net.
Hull City doubled their advantage in the 38th minute. Noble Mendy of Senegal rose to meet Regan Slater's free kick into the penalty area and made it 2-0 with a powerful header.
Manchester United unable to reduce the deficit
Manchester United increased the pressure in the second half in an effort to close the gap. The visitors came close to scoring in the 78th minute, but Greek goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis kept out a powerful shot from Cameroonian Bryan Mbeumo after he received the ball in the penalty area.
Hull City maintained their advantage in the remaining minutes to win the match 2-0. Hull City therefore celebrated their return to the Premier League with a victory, while Manchester United began the new season with an unexpected defeat.
