The International Union of Muslim Scholars backed the Makkah Joint Defense Agreement signed by Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. The union described the agreement as an important step toward the unity and independence of the Islamic world.
The union's written statement cited verses from the Quran that encourage unity and solidarity. It said the agreement between the three countries would strengthen the Islamic ummah's ability to confront common threats.
Call to expand the scope of cooperation
The statement said the Makkah Joint Defense Agreement should not remain limited to military and security fields. It expressed the hope that the agreement would eventually develop into institutional cooperation covering political, economic, social, scientific and development fields.
The statement described the meeting of Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan as strategically significant and argued that the three countries are important, complementary powers in the Islamic world. It highlighted Saudi Arabia's religious, historical, political and economic weight; Türkiye's political, military, industrial and economic strength; and Pakistan's military capabilities and strategic position.
The union said joint action by the three countries could form a solid core for strengthening unity and cooperation in the Islamic world. It said the agreement's signing on August 7 in the Holy City of Makkah, in the shadow of the Grand Mosque, carried deep spiritual and symbolic significance.
Call for other Muslim countries to join
The statement called for the initiative not to remain limited to the three countries. It urged other Muslim countries that support the Islamic world's core issues, particularly the Palestinian cause and the protection of Al-Aqsa Mosque, to join the process.
Addressing the leaders, scholars and institutions of Muslim countries, the International Union of Muslim Scholars called for the opportunities offered by the agreement to be assessed. The union stressed the need to achieve integration based on common interests and strengthen peace, security and cooperation in the Islamic world.
