Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi criticized a post by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot accusing Iran of repression on the anniversary of Mahsa Amini’s death.
In a statement posted on his X account, Araghchi told Barrot to “stop the crocodile tears.” The Iranian minister argued that France had remained silent while the United States was killing children in Iran.
Araghchi also claimed that France killed 1.5 million Algerians during the country’s war of independence. He said Paris had officially recorded fewer than one-tenth of that number and added that France had still not apologized for its practices during the colonial period.
In a post marking the anniversary of Amini’s death, Barrot accused Iran of repression and said that Amini had been “killed for demanding freedom.”
The death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini on September 16, 2022, three days after she was detained by morality police for allegedly failing to comply with mandatory hijab rules, sparked protests across Iran.
