The chiefs of general staff of NATO’s 32 member countries met in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, to discuss implementing the decisions taken at the alliance’s latest summit in Ankara and strengthening deterrence and collective defense capabilities.
The meeting of NATO’s Military Committee, the alliance’s highest military body, was held on Saturday. It was chaired by committee Chairman Giuseppe Cavo Dragone.
In addition to the chiefs of general staff of the allied countries, NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe Alexus Grynkewich and NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Transformation Pierre Vandier also attended the meeting.
Euro-Atlantic security on the agenda
In his opening remarks, Dragone drew attention to the effects of the Russia-Ukraine war on Euro-Atlantic security. He said incidents such as violations of NATO countries’ airspace, cyberattacks and acts of sabotage had been recurring.
Dragone said the allies were responding to these developments in a spirit of unity and solidarity, and said Ukraine was continuing its struggle for sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity. He noted that NATO would continue its support for Ukraine.
Military implementation of Ankara Summit decisions to be discussed
The meeting will focus on the military implementation of the decisions taken at the Ankara Summit, held on July 7 and 8. The discussions address deterrence and collective defense, as well as innovation and technology.
Another item on the agenda is accelerating the deployment of new defense capabilities.

NATO’s Military Committee provides military advice to the North Atlantic Council, the alliance’s political decision-making body. The committee meets three times a year at the chiefs of general staff level: twice, in January and March, at NATO headquarters in Brussels, and a third time each year in an allied country that hosts the meeting.
Ankara hosted NATO’s 36th Summit on July 7 and 8. The summit was held at a time when security and geopolitical developments were intensifying in Europe and the Middle East.
