Hot weather expected to affect Istanbul through midweek will give way to rainy conditions from Friday as a cool air flow moves in from the north. Temperatures in the city are expected to fall to 21°C on Friday, with showers and thunderstorms forecast.
According to forecasts from the Turkish State Meteorological Service, temperatures in Istanbul will reach as high as 32°C this week. Temperatures are expected to remain around 31-32°C on Thursday before falling significantly on Friday.
Rain will begin on Friday
Adil Tek, a meteorological engineer working at the Meteorology Laboratory of Boğaziçi University’s Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute, said the temperature change was a seasonally normal weather transition.
Tek said the cool air flow arriving from the north would bring relief to the northern areas from Thursday and that rain was expected across Istanbul on Friday. He said the Anatolian side of the city could receive more rainfall and noted that the risk could be higher in the northern districts, with Beylikdüzü and Bakırköy also among the areas expected to receive rain.
Rain is expected to begin lightly on Friday morning and intensify in the afternoon. The rainfall is forecast to continue intermittently from Saturday afternoon through the evening before losing its effect on Sunday, while temperatures are expected to begin rising to 28-29°C.
Tek said Istanbul residents would feel the cool weather more clearly on Friday afternoon and Saturday, adding that temperatures could fall to 18°C in the city during the transition.
Strong northeasterly winds expected in the Marmara region
Güven Özdemir, an assistant professor and meteorological engineer at Istanbul Aydın University, said the cool air would be particularly effective on Friday and Saturday. Özdemir said daytime temperatures could be 27-29°C, while nighttime temperatures could remain around 22°C.
Özdemir said strong northeasterly winds were expected across the entire Marmara region on Friday, with wind speeds reaching 40-60 kilometers per hour. He noted that rainfall was also expected to spread from Thrace to the Black Sea, Central Anatolia, eastern parts of the Mediterranean and Eastern Anatolia.
Meteorological engineer Sinan Şahinoğlu said a cut-off low-pressure system expected to approach the Black Sea from Crimea would affect Turkey’s northern areas. Şahinoğlu said daytime high temperatures in the Marmara region were expected to fall to 27-29°C on Friday, while nighttime temperatures were forecast to drop to 20-21°C.
Şahinoğlu said local showers and thunderstorms could occur as strong northerly and northeasterly winds, occasionally reaching gale force, interact with humid air and cold air in the upper levels of the atmosphere.
Heavy rain is expected on Saturday in inland parts of Central Anatolia, the Black Sea region and the Mediterranean region. The rainy system is forecast to move eastward from Saturday evening, reducing its impact in the western regions.
Experts expect September temperatures to remain above seasonal averages and summer conditions to continue for some time. They also forecast abundant precipitation and above-average temperatures during the winter months.
