New Zealand actor Sam Neill has died at the age of 78. His family announced that he died "suddenly and unexpectedly" in Sydney.
In a statement posted on the actor's social media account on Monday, the family said Neill was "cancer-free" at the time of his death, but the cause of death was not disclosed.
Neill had announced in 2023 that he was diagnosed with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare type of lymphoma.
Known for productions such as "Jurassic Park" and "The Piano," Neill had a versatile career spanning art-house films to blockbusters. In "Jurassic Park," he played the character fleeing velociraptors, and in "The Piano," he portrayed Holly Hunter's husband.
Neill was among the actors and directors who gained international fame with the Australian film boom that began in the late 1970s. These names also include Paul Hogan, Mel Gibson, Geoffrey Rush, Russell Crowe, Jane Campion, Peter Weir, and Gillian Armstrong.
