Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov announced that Russia will closely monitor the NATO leaders' summit in Ankara, the Turkish capital.
Speaking to reporters, Peskov said, "This is an event of great interest to us as well. Of course, we will follow all news and information coming from Ankara."
Noting that many statements about Russia were made ahead of the summit, Peskov said, "I regret to say that these were not about constructive engagement and dialogue, but rather confrontational in nature."
US President Donald Trump had said he would speak about the Ukraine war at the summit and assessed that a solution to the conflict, which has been going on for over four years, is "closer than people think."
Peskov, for his part, expressed hope that the US efforts to "move the entire situation to a peaceful footing" would ultimately succeed, adding, "At least, as the Russian President has repeatedly said, we remain open to dialogue."
