Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov harshly criticized the West's stance on the Ukraine crisis in an interview with Russian news agency TASS.
Lavrov argued that Western countries are trying to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia and divide it.
Claiming that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is constantly retreating on the front and resorting to terrorist acts out of desperation, Lavrov said: “They (Westerners) see Zelenskyy’s long-range weapons hitting targets. They have started to portray the developments as a turning point.”
On the West's demand for a ceasefire before negotiations, Lavrov stated:
“The Westerners want a ceasefire before negotiations. After that, they will introduce military forces into Ukraine under the leadership of France and Britain. Only after that will they sit at the negotiating table. This is an ultimatum. Maintaining the contact line will allow the Nazi regime (in Ukraine) to continue to exist. They will not recognize the regions where the referendum was held.”
Lavrov noted that the US and Europe are not ready to build a relationship with Russia based on equality and mutual respect, which is why alternative centers of power such as BRICS have emerged.
Stressing Russia's determination to protect its independence and borders, Lavrov said that there should be no interference in internal affairs.
Recalling that former Russian President Boris Yeltsin resigned in 1999 and handed power to Vladimir Putin, Lavrov said: “At that time, he (Putin) was the only person who could save Russia. This is a historic turning point. This means Russia has been chosen by God. When things get difficult, help comes to us from above.”
Stating that when Putin came to power he was open to an equal strategic partnership with the West, but now former allies are fighting against Russia through Ukraine, Lavrov said: “And now our former allies, with varying degrees of madness – London more so, the US somewhat less – are fighting against us through Ukraine, giving Ukraine modern weapons.”
Lavrov added that the West is imposing sanctions to block Russia's development.
