Olympique Lyon coach Fonseca said his team needed to produce a balanced performance ahead of their match against Fenerbahçe. Speaking at a press conference held at Lyon’s training ground, Fonseca said the match would be an important day for the club.
Fonseca said they were aware of their opponents’ quality and stressed to his players the importance of maintaining balance. He said Fenerbahçe would not take the field solely to defend and would be aiming to win.
Fonseca explains his rotation policy
Fonseca also explained why they had chosen to rotate the squad. The coach said he trusted all of his players and that they had responded positively to the decision, adding that he had taken their physical condition into account.
Fonseca said it was not easy to have a player play three or four matches in a row and explained that this was why they had opted for rotation.
Lyon wary of Fenerbahçe’s transition attacks
Fonseca said the match would be an open contest in which both teams would want to win, adding that Fenerbahçe could be dangerous on counterattacks, particularly when transitioning from defense to attack.
Fonseca said Lyon would take the initiative and play its own game, adding that they wanted to attack whenever they found opportunities. He stressed that his team needed to be effective in attack while also maintaining its defensive balance.
Lyon’s Champions League target
Fonseca said the players were highly motivated and wanted to achieve a success that would go down in the club’s history. The coach said Lyon had been unable to qualify for the Champions League in recent years and described the objective as a major opportunity for the team.
Fonseca said the players and everyone around the club understood the importance of qualifying for the Champions League, adding that they needed to remain balanced while maintaining a positive and motivated approach.
Responding to a question about the atmosphere created by Fenerbahçe supporters, Fonseca said the fans loved football and were passionate but not aggressive.
Openda: The chances of advancing are 50-50
Olympique Lyon striker Lois Openda said there was a positive expectation in the city and within the team ahead of the match. Openda said everyone was eager for the game and that Lyon wanted to qualify for the Champions League this year, a target the club had been pursuing for a long time.
Openda described the atmosphere in the first match as extraordinary. The forward said he believed the supporters would once again back the team in a packed stadium, adding that they had returned from Türkiye with a good result in mind and that he was also trying to show his quality on the field.
Openda said they were ready for the match against Fenerbahçe and that the team needed to focus on its speed, use of space and ability to play as a unit.
Openda said they were aware of Fenerbahçe’s quality and viewed the chances of advancing as equal. He added that he had not spoken with Romelu Lukaku before the match and did not think there was a favorite.
