A man who appeared to be drunk insulted and threatened a young woman in a hijab in a Moscow metro carriage in late September after she said she was from Chechnya, loudly asking passengers, "Are there any Chechens here?", according to the Caucasian Knot news site.

The man first recorded a video apology and the next day apologized again on his knees to the woman, the Chechen people and Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, saying a man named Muhammed had asked him to kneel. Experts and a lawyer quoted by Caucasian Knot criticized the forced kneeling, saying it could constitute a criminal offense if threats were proven.
