Manchester City has entered the race to sign young Moroccan midfielder Ayoub Bouaddi, who drew attention with his performance at the 2026 World Cup. The English club has prepared a special plan to add the 18-year-old talent, who is also being pursued by Liverpool and Arsenal, to its squad.
Bouaddi played for Morocco in the World Cup against Brazil and Scotland, both wins, was rested for the Haiti match, and then returned to action in the round of 32 penalty shootout victory against the Netherlands. He played a critical role in Morocco's march to the quarterfinals with this performance.
The young player, who drew attention before the tournament by choosing Morocco over France, quickly became one of the tournament's most important discoveries.
According to Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City plans to buy out Bouaddi's contract with his club Lille, which runs until 2029, and then loan the player back to the French side for the 2026-2027 season. This strategy aims to allow Bouaddi to continue his development and gain experience before stepping into the Premier League.
Manchester City has previously applied a similar approach with young prospects like Brazilian Vitor Reis and Norwegian Sverre Halseth Nyppan. The club uses this method to let players mature on loan before integrating them into the main squad.
Bouaddi, however, says his current focus is entirely on the World Cup. Speaking to The Athletic, the young star said, "Right now, I am completely focused on the World Cup; I cannot talk about my future. The interest from clubs makes me happy, but all my attention is on giving my best performance with the Moroccan national team."
Morocco has been drawn against Canada in the quarterfinals. Canada, for its part, achieved its best-ever World Cup result by beating South Africa 1-0 in the round of 32.
